What to Expect During Your Massage Therapy Visit

If this is your first time enjoying a massage, you may be nervous about the intimacy. Rest assured that we take each client’s particular needs and comfort levels into consideration. While most massage and bodywork techniques are usually performed with the client unclothed, in most cases, you can undress only as much as you feel comfortable and still enjoy the benefits of the treatment. During the session, you will be properly draped for your comfort.

Massage Therapy — Shiatsu

It is best if you have not eaten much immediately before your session. You may also wish to arrive 10 minutes or so early so that you have time to relax.

In shiatsu, the treatment is usually performed either on a low massage table or on the floor. Because no massage oil is used during the session, clients may remain fully clothed, as long as they wear loose, comfortable clothing. Using mostly her fingertips but also her thumbs and palms, the shiatsu therapist applies pressure in a continuous rhythmic sequence. The focus on using the finger pads makes the pressure feel more localized than in other types of massage, which generally use the entire palm.

As with other types of massage, certain parts of the body and pressure points may feel tender. No matter where you are in your session, you should always feel free to let your massage therapist know how much pressure is the right level of comfort for you.

Reiki

If your visit is for a reiki session, please wear loose, comfortable clothing and limited jewelry. During your treatment, you will enjoy a gentle, relaxing experience that will be tailored just for you. Many people have reported feeling a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around the body. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being.

After removing your shoes, you will lie fully clothed on a special table and allow your body to relax with the aid of calming music and aromatherapy. At the beginning of the treatment, the practitioner will perform a non-invasive scan of the body with her hands to determine the areas that need treatment. She will then hold her hands above or lightly touch the affected areas and/or your chakras, which will allow your qito flow to the areas where it is most needed. The entire process is completely calm and soothing, and will often vary each time you come in, depending on your present state of wellness or mood.
