What Is Shiatsu Massage?
Based in traditional Chinese medicine, shiatsu is a form of bodywork that is sometimes referred to as “finger-pressure massage,” which is its literal meaning in Japanese.
As with acupuncture, shiatsu is based on the holistic system of traditional Chinese medicine, where illness is thought to result from imbalances in the natural flow of energy, or qi (sometimes spelled “chi”) through the body. Shiatsu therapists use finger and palm pressure to energize pathways, called meridians, to improve the flow of qi.
From a scientific perspective, shiatsu calms an overactive sympathetic nervous system, which may improve circulation, relieve stiff muscles, and alleviate stress.
