Conditions We Treat

Neck pain treatment in Santa Monica.

Your head weighs about ten to twelve pounds when it sits directly over your shoulders. Tilt it forward to look at a screen and the effective load on your neck climbs sharply.

What tech neck actually is

“Tech neck” is not a formal diagnosis. It is shorthand for a cluster of symptoms that show up when the head sits forward of the shoulders for long stretches — most often while looking at a phone, a laptop, or a monitor set too low.

The deep muscles at the front of the neck lengthen and weaken, the muscles along the back tighten to compensate, and the upper back rounds to follow.

What people usually notice first

  • An ache at the base of the neck that builds through the day
  • Tight, ropey muscles across the tops of the shoulders
  • Headaches that start at the back of the skull
  • Stiffness turning your head to check a blind spot
  • A dull burn between the shoulder blades

Why it tends to get worse quietly

Most of these symptoms ease overnight. You wake up feeling fine, so it never seems urgent — and then it returns by mid-afternoon. That daily reset is what allows the underlying pattern to keep deepening for months before anyone gets it looked at.

The posture becomes the resting position rather than a temporary one.

What actually helps

Two things have to change together: the load, and the tissue that has been carrying it.

Reducing the load is mostly about screen height and breaks. Raising a monitor so the top third sits at eye level does more than any single stretch, and standing up every half hour matters more than the length of any one break.

For the tissue itself, treatment usually combines hands-on work to release the tight posterior muscles, adjustments to restore movement where the joints have stiffened, and — the part people skip — strengthening the deep neck flexors that stopped doing their job.
